US: Flash Flood Hits Durham, NC Days After Tropical Depression Chantal

Several parts of North Carolina experienced severe flash flooding on Wednesday, July 9, as a strong line of thunderstorms moved into the region, just days after Tropical Depression Chantal brought intense flooding to Chapel Hill. The Durham Fire Department responded to multiple calls as a result of flooding across the city and surrounding areas, including rescue operation.

Growing flowers to be shipped to central Tokyo became popular in Isoko, Okamura, and Tomioka from mid-Meiji Period on and some of the flowers were exported. Horikiri Iris Garden is a general name for a number of gardens such as Kotaka-en, Musashi-en, Yoshino-en, and Horikiri-en. This photograph shows Kotaka-en, which was established by a farmer named Kotaka Isaemon who grew irises here for the first time. The iris gardens of Horikiri closed one after another from around 1925 due to changes in the environment and floods.
